Why Not Write A Book?

Do you have any idea how many times in my dog training career I have been asked, "Why Not Write A Book?". Yes, I have invaluable training tips and ideas on how to get what I want from a dog in the training arena. Yes, this information should be in a spot for both professionals and the lay person to be able to access it. So why not do it?

I will tell you that the book, with all the information I have, would be larger the the Encyclopedia Britannica But let's say that I would not mind writing such a voluminous piece. So why haven't I written this world masterpiece? The answer is very simple, I love dogs to much to subject them to any abuse. Where am I coming from: if I don't believe in using any type of abuse how could possibly a dog be abused from such an enlightening book?

Knowledge is power but when only a small amount of knowledge is given the results could be disastrous. Training cannot be done from a book. Even the simplest commands could be distorted by the written word. Every dog has their individual personality's so to give advice or knowledge on a specific note, the new trainer, lay person, or even the professional can misapply the information. One cannot write down every scenario that you can encounter during a training experience with a specific animal. Therefore since the advice cannot be that user specific or in this case, dog specific, the dog can become confused and abused because the "trainer" cannot have all the information up front.

Take an example of training a sharp/shy dog. In one case the dog should be burnt out from exercise before training that specific dog on a specific day. The dog's mindset on another day could demand that the dog should not be exercised on that specific day. One cannot write a book with all that individual specific information. Therefore the wrong technique could be applied and in-turn the dog can be psychologically hurt.

That is why I have never written a book. For those who write books, pretending to be all knowing, shame on you. You have written books and people have used your advice and I will bet dollars to doughnuts you have created more harm than good. So enjoy your profits and I don't know how you sleep at night, or do you care?
