The Perfect Pet

The lowly hermit crab. Looking at him you would never think that they could be considered a perfect pet. But they are. They never make noise, they are easy to feed, never require a bath, when they get to know you they are loving and demonstrative, play with them for an hour and they go to sleep for three to four days at a time, they don't make a mess of your house, so what more could you ask for. They love being sprayed gently in the face with a water bottle, in fact to get a rapport with a hermit crab this is the way to go. The are intelligent and can comprehend love and live about 1 1/2 to 3 years. When they do wake up if you really want to give them a good time put blankets or towels on the floor. Do not smooth them out make them have highs and lows so you can put the hermit crab on them and he will climb them.

Now to keep your hermit crab happy he should be housed in a twenty gallon long tank and with gravel that is small and loosely packed. He/she should have a water bowl inset in the gravel so the water level, when the crab is in it, goes up 1/3 of his shell. The crab should be able to climb in and out of his/her water bowl with ease. A nice size ash tray usually works. The water should be changed daily. They love to eat lizard soft food, Fruit Loops, dried fruit, vegetables and meat out of canned soup and hard dog and cat food. All food should be placed on a small piece (4"X4") of indoor outdoor carpeting so it does not get all over the place. They need extra shells in case they decide to change their place of residence and these shell must be the same size as the one they have or slightly larger. They love to climb rocks and tree branches but make sure that they are set up so if the hermit crab falls he will not get hurt.
